RUB Hanmun Summer School in August 2026 (Bochum)

The Korean Studies department at Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) is pleased

to announce its first Hanmun Summer School dedicated to pre-modern

Korean language and literature. Over four days of intensive instruction,

participants will explore the world of Hanmun and gain a basic knowledge

of this important literary language of pre-modern Korea through engaging

lectures, guided exercises, and carefully selected teaching materials.

By the end of the program, students will have built a basic grammatical

foundation following the "Practical Hanmun" model, developed the skills

to read basic texts, and gained a richer understanding of Hanmun as a

key skill for researching the Korean literary tradition. No prior

knowledge of Hanmun or Hancha is required (even though a basic knowledge

of Hancha is helpful).

The language of instruction is English.

Students will be introduced to the e-Learning System for Hanmun at RUB

and will be able to use this system to solidify their knowledge of

Hanmun by self-learning after the Summer School. Access to the

self-learning system is free of charge.

The Summer School will be led by an internationally experienced team of

instructors: Prof. Dr. Diana Yüksel (University of Bucharest), Prof. Dr.

Barbara Wall (University of Copenhagen), Prof. Dr. Felix Siegmund (Ruhr

University Bochum) and Imane Massaadi (Ruhr University Bochum).

We warmly invite faculty to share this opportunity with students

interested in pre-modern Korean studies.

Where: Ruhr University Bochum (Bochum, Germany).

Who: University students of all levels without or with little training

in Hanmun.

When: 10-15 August 2026. There will also be a preparatory introduction

to Hancha in late July for students without prior training in Hancha.

Costs: Participation in the program is free. Limited financial support

for accomodation at Bochum is available; however, participants are

expected to cover their own costs for transportation and meals.

Deadline for application: 31 May 2026

How to apply: Please send an email with your personal information (name,

university, main subject/major, semester/years of university

instruction) and a short statement of your motivation for learning

Hanmun to
