The Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for a full-time three-year PhD scholarship, with an expected starting date of 1 February 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The PhD project will be part of the research project Sensing Korea: Reframing Korean Studies in the Nordic Countries, funded by the Academy of Korean Studies. Sensing Korea aims to develop sensory and narrative approaches to Korean Studies in order to explore the diversity of Korean experiences beyond essentializing representations.

The PhD scholarship is funded through the Core University Program for Korean Studies of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea and the Korean Studies Promotion Service at the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS-2026-OLU-2250001). Sensing Korea is led by Barbara Wall and hosted by Korean Studies at the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies, University of Copenhagen. The project runs for five years, from June 2026 to May 2031.

The PhD candidate will be supervised by project leader Barbara Wall and will work closely with a project team comprising scholars based at the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies as well as researchers from Korean Studies programs at other Nordic universities. The candidate is also expected to have an interest in communicating academic knowledge about Korea to a broader public.
