The 4th Biennial Conference of the World Consortium for Research in Confucian Cultures

Dates: October 31st–November 2nd 2024

Venue: Ewha Womans University, Seoul, Korea

The Organizing Committee of the 4th biennial conference of the World Consortium for Research in Confucian Cultures gladly announces a call for proposals.

Conference theme: “Between Confucianism and the World: Emotions, Freedom, and Relationships”

Conference and Organizing and Program Committee:

Heisook Kim (Ewha Womans University), Roger T. Ames (Peking University), So Jeong Park (Sungkyunkwan University) (co-chairs)

Peter Hershock (East-West Center)

Jaehwan Lee (Ewha Womans University)

Seonhee Kim (Ewha Womans University)

Doil Kim (Sungkyunkwan University)

Wonsuk Chang (Academy of Korean Studies)

Sponsors: Institute of Philosophy at Ewha Womans University, Center for K-Academic Expansion Project and 3T R&E Project Group based on Confucian, Eastern and Korean Philosophy at Sungkyunkwan University

As we witness today the world seems to be in a perfect storm--from the inner self to global level. In this conference, we hope to address how Confucianism, as a key cultural resource highlighting human roles and relationships, can respond to such multidimensional crises now afflicting the world. How might we rethink human emotions, individual freedom, and familial and communal relations using Confucian cultural resources?

We encourage the submission of a variety of papers relevant to these topics. We also invite proposals from graduate students hoping this conference will be an opportunity for the young generation of Confucian research.

We are especially grateful to have this meaningful conference sponsored by the Institute of Philosophy at Ewha Womans University and K-Academic Expansion Project at Sungkyunkwan University, institutions representing, respectively, women’s awareness and Korean Confucian traditions.
