Abstract:
This presentation examines the educational desire of three distinct groups of South Koreans residing in contemporary China: migrant parents, migrant children/international students, and educational intermediaries. It reveals how these individuals navigate school selection, chart their educational pathways, and interact with local governmental bodies. The subjectivity of these migrants are shaped by and react to the educational and migratory regimes of both their home country and the host nation. Positioned as 'people in between two states', these migrants experience an ambivalent mixture of privilege, integration and separation. Ultimately, the presentation posits that China functions primarily as a temporary destination rather than a permanent settlement for international migrants.
