„Unsettling Bodies: Re-Figuring Life and Spaces in Global Asia“

“Your Body Is a Battleground,” a slogan coined by Barbara Kruger in the context of the women’s reproductive freedom movement in 1989, invites us to consider the corporeal as a socially constructed field of engagement for body politics. Beyond the ongoing (or reignited) issue of women’s reproductive rights worldwide, we are witnessing a broad spectrum of phenomena and discussions pivoting around the question of bodies that unsettle the societal status quo. Under the title Unsettling Bodies: Re-Figuring Life and Spaces in Global Asia, we present two guest lectures focusing on recent developments in Asia.

In his talk, “Flexible Masculinities: Negotiating Gender, Sexuality, and Ethnicity in Embodied Ethnography,” Minwoo Jung (Loyola University, Chicago) explores how individuals navigate various forms of hegemonic masculinity when they cross geographic and cultural boundaries. Through the lens of flexible masculinities, he highlights dynamic relations between masculinities, societies, and individuals based on a multi-sited and embodied ethnography of global queer Asia.

“Re-figuration of Bodies, the Life-World, and Worth in Seoul,” a presentation based on collaborative research by Mihye Cho (Sungkonghoe University) and Sohyeon Peik (Sungkonghoe University), revisits the tragic incident in Itaewon, Seoul in November 2023, where over 150 people lost their lives. Based on analyses of public discourse after the incident and interviews with those who identify themselves as “survivors,” they inquire how the site, bodies, and (un)grievability are politically entangled.
