SUMMARY:
The modern world has constructed a whole host of narratives about Gen Z. We are seen as selfish, apathetic, consumerist, and devoid of culture. We are stereotyped. Shunned. And largely dismissed by those above us. These labels, however, are often created without any real knowledge or understanding of how and why we live. They do not reflect the reality we experience. Our lives, values, and experiences differ wildly from those who lived through the 20th century. And is it any surprise?
Social media and personalized digital experiences have resulted in the death of mainstream culture. People now no longer watch the same television set or listen to the same music charts. We are all connected to the internet through our own personalized algorithms. My life is not yours. And yours is not mine.
This contemporary youth panel is designed to explore how different young women in South Korea navigate life, identity, the internet, and the future. It provides insight into the language, the memes, the culture, and the values that drive us, that shape our communication, and reflect our personalities. We are connected to AI and a variety of computerized systems. We navigate the digital world and interact with celebrities that make millions playing computer games. We create multiple online personalities, each one tailored to a specific part of our identity. And we laugh. At the idiosyncrasies of life and our place in the world. This is who we are. And our revolution will not be televised. It will probably just be posted as an Insta story that disappears after 24 hours and is replaced by a rather optimistic pelican.
