Seoul Mates: Ethnographic Perspectives on the Transformation of Intimacy in South Korea

2025 American Anthropological Association Annual Meeting, New Orleans, LA USA, November 19-23rd 2025.
This panel will explore shifts in intimate relationships in contemporary South Korea and the Korean diaspora. Throughout the 20th and 21stcenturies, Korea has undergone rapid industrialization accompanied by dramatic social and technological transformations that have shaped kinship, courtship, homosocial relationships, and sexual and romantic intimacies. Many of these transformations have drawn interest well outside of Korean studies, including the 4B movement, the evolution of K-pop fandom, and Korea’s infamous distinction of possessing the lowest fertility rate in the world. This panel aims to bring together recent ethnographic accounts of transformations in intimate relationships in South Korea how social and material transformations in Korean society are shaping Korean’s most intimate relationships including within workplaces, homes, and cyberspace. The hope in organizing this panel is to bring together ethnographers working exploring topics and intimate relationships within a wide range of settings, including, but not limited to:
Papers will be selected for inclusion on the basis of the originality of their data or perspective, as well as on their ability to complement other papers on the panel. If sufficient papers are received, this may be made into a two-part panel.

You may only be a presenting author on one paper at the AAA Annual Meeting
All participants must be AAA members and must register for the conference by August 31st. You will need to create an account profile on the AAA website in order to be included in the panel submission.
This is an in-person event, virtual presentations will not be allowed
Authors will be informed of inclusion on the submission of this panel by April 13th, giving you time to submit your proposal as an individually volunteered flash paper (Flash Presentation or Poster)
