Workshop, in English & Korean: 한국의 반공주의, 국가보안법, 그리고 사상통제

Please join us online for this Workshop hosted by the Korea Journal and the Academy of Korean Studies. (Sorry, in-person participation is restricted to invitees.)

Six contributors to Korea Journal’s Summer, 2025 special issue on “Anti-Communism, National Security Law, and Thought Control in South Korea” will present their working drafts for comments from, and discussion among, workshop participants.

Panel I will be conducted mostly in English. With presentations by Sandra Park, Thomas Ryan, and Ted Hughes, the papers examine some of the creative (myth-making) and ambivalent (counter-state) aspects of anti-communism in Post-Korean War South Korea.

Panel II will be conducted mostly in Korean. With presentations by Jung Keun-sik, Kim Dong-Choon, and Oh Dong-Suk, the papers examine the colonial period antecedents and the post-colonial afterlives of forced political conversion, censorship, and the National Security Law in South Korea.
